Teaching with distractions

Teaching ‘center’ to Brodie for the first time. Ā This is how most training sessions go when dogs don’t know what we want and when they are distracted. Ā Even I deal with the ‘chaos’ haha. The goal here is to work through the energy, excitement and distractions and keep the dog focused on the task at hand. Brodie doesn’t know what I want so I’m gonna lure with treats here and reward anytime he goes between my legs…whether in a down or sit or stand. Once we get it a few times, I’ll wait for him to sit and reward that. By the end of this short session, he began to understand what I want. I do give him a release cue each time to tell him he can leave the position as well.

— Julie

A lot of trust

Stepping over dogs while they are in a vulnerable position can be very hard for them…it’s scary. But if you can get that level of trust, it’s huge! Ā Here I am working with some boot camp dogs who are on place and in downs…and walking over them.
